vCenter Converter Task FAILED $Reconfig$

Recently I was running a P2V conversion of a Server 2003 file server. It had approximately 200GB in Hard Drives, so the conversion took a considerable amout of time. (25 hours and 46 minutes to be exact)

Finally at 95% it stopped with:

Error: An error occurred during reconfiguration

FAILED: Unable to create ‘\\.\vstor2-mntapi10-shared-69066906007E00000000000007000000\$Reconfig$’.

I was a little nervous that I would have to run the conversion again, but decided to try to boot the Virtual Machine to see if it would just work anyways. Since it was at 95% I was sure that all the data had been converted.

When I started the VM I got a BSOD with a stop error 7B, meaning that the storage controller driver had not been installed during the conversion.

I then decided to run the Configure Machine task in vCenter Converter. It took 13 minutes and Completed Successfully!

I was then able to boot up the VM with no problem.

Note: the original host was an HP DL385 server, so after installation of VMTools I mounted Kendrik Colemans VM Advanced ISO and ran the P2V cleanup tools.

I haven’t had any issues with the server since.
